GP earns Tk 3,581cr in revenue in first half

Mobile operator Grameenphone has earned Tk 3,581 crore in revenue in the first half of this year, which is 12 per cent higher than the same period of last year, said GP officials.
The company earned Tk 1,877 crore in revenue in second quarter, April-June, which is 15 per cent higher than the corresponding period of last year, GP officials said in a press conference at a city hotel on Sunday.
The operator’s chief financial officer, Raihan Shamsi, said it had added 2.6 million new subscribers during the quarter.
‘Grameenphone’s total subscription base now is 26.5 million, which is 44 per cent of the mobile market in the country’, he added.
Officials noted that the revenue increase was mainly fostered by subscription growth and revenues from sales of handsets and data cards.

GP pays largest amount Large taxpayers paid more than Tk 3.5 billion in excess of the tax target set for the large taxpayers unit (LTU) in the just concluded fiscal (FY) (2009-10) with the cell phone giant GrameenPhone (GP) contributing the most. GP paid nearly Tk 7.50 billion in taxes in the FY'10 despite enjoying a tax cut because of its listing with the bourses. Last year, the GP paid Tk 5.35 billion. Officials said the GP paid tax at a rate of 35 per cent as it offloaded share in the last fiscal. The GP paid tax at a rate of 45 per cent in 2008-09 fiscal. The tax officials have estimated the loss at worth Tk 1.20 billion because of its listing. Islami Bank paid Tk 3.33 billion, up by Tk 100 million from the previous fiscal, to become the second largest taxpayer in the last fiscal. Standard Chartered Bank paid Tk 2.50 billion in 2009-2010 fiscal holding the third position. In the fiscal 2008-09, the bank paid Tk 2.20 billion in taxes. The LTU under the income tax department has able to surpass the target through effective monitoring in the month of July. "The LTU has collected 25 per cent of its annual target in July alone. Despite many hurdles, the unit could surpass its target for 2009-2010 fiscal," said a senior official of LTU. The target for LTU was Tk 58 billion out of Tk 165 billion total collection target for income tax department. According to a provisional figure, the unit collected Tk 61.65 billion in the fiscal 2009-10, which is a record collection in the history of LTU. Tax officials said there were some challenges to meet the revenue collection target in last fiscal. The government reduced corporate tax rates to 42.5 per cent from 45.0 per cent in the budget for 2009-2010. Revenue officials estimated the loss at Tk. 2.0 billion for the cut in corporate tax rates. The tax officials have estimated Tk 3.0 billion losses for 10 per cent tax rebate for investment in CSR (corporate social responsibility). A number of corporate taxpayers also enjoyed 10 per cent tax rebate for sponsoring in SAAF games. The LTU was able to achieve the first ever success in revenue collection amid several negative indicators, said a senior LTU official. "The unit devised some strategies for the second half of the last fiscal to overcome those constraints in revenue collection," he said. The LTU increased number of audit teams to beef up revenue collection by plugging leakage, he added. Direct communication with the large taxpayers, intensified monitoring to boost advance tax collection, data collection from different organization to find out tax evasion did help the revenue collection efforts of the unit, the official said. The LTU has a total of 987 taxpayers in its jurisdiction. Of the taxpayers, 279 are corporate and 708 are individual taxpayers. The unit introduced online tax returns last year to facilitate large taxpayers. A total of 40 taxpayers have submitted online return until January 2010. Of them, 33 are corporate taxpayers and seven individuals.

Profit taking and fall in Grameenphone shares took shines off Dhaka stocks in the shortened week that ended Wednesday, the last week of just concluded financial year. The benchmark DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) General Index (DGEN) closed the week at 6153.68, shedding 0.58 per cent or 36.17 points. The broader All Shares Price Index (DSI) was down by 0.45 per cent or 22.89 points to 5111.63, while the DSE-20 blue chip index gained slightly 0.10 per cent or 3.67 points to 3650.04. Investors took profit on some banking stocks ahead of half-yearly closing, contributing to fall of the market, according to the stockbrokers. Other major factors that had an adverse impact on investor sentiment during the week included sliding in share prices of GP and reaction to the changes in the margin lending rules, an investment bank executive said. But the trading activity was higher as the average daily turnover was recorded at Tk 16.63 billion, showing an increase of 12.50 per cent despite shortening trading days to four from five due to the bank holiday Thursday. Financial stocks, including banks and leasing or non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) dominated the week both in value and volume. GP, the lone listed company of the telecommunications sector, came down Tk 240. Its slide started in April, with a short respite around the dates of the company's annual general meeting. Ones the issue traded at Tk 395. "GP's pre-IPO placement of shares, which is equal to the size of the current public float, enters into trading from fourth quarter of this year after expiry of the lock-in period. This anticipation led the selling pressure by institutional investors," said BRAC-EPL, an investment bank, in its weekly market commentary. It said, another important development during this week was the reaction to the changes in the margin lending rules. On June 20, the Securities and Exchange Commission ordered merchant banks and stockbrokers not to lend to purchase equities with PE ratio above 40. But volumes in the market went up as sectors with lower PE ratios benefited from the securities regulator's price curbing measures. Out of four trading sessions, the market closed positive in the first session Sunday defying a nationwide strike called by the main opposition party with investors executing trade over mobile phones. Rahima Food was the largest gainer posting a rise of 36.18 per cent during the week. It was followed by Kohinoor Chemicals, Prime Textile, 4th ICB Mutual Fund, Exim Bank, United Leasing, Miracle Industries, City Bank, and Peoples Leasing and Financial Services. Progressive Life, Eastern Lubricants, Modern Industries, Rupali Life Insurance Company Limited, Quasem Silk, Purabi General Insurance, Samata Leather, Prime Islami Life Insurance and Meghna Life Insurance were the week's prominent losers. Titas Gas was the top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 4.38 billion changing hands. Other turnover leaders were Beximco Limited, AB Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank, Premier Bank Ltd, Lankabangla Finance Company, Standard Bank Limited, NBL, Peoples Leasing & Fin Services and Islami Bank.

Grameenphone Ltd, country's largest mobile phone operator Saturday crossed 25 million-mark active subscriber base. "We are extremely happy to see such a milestone and our concerted efforts will continue to develop the country's economy through mobile connectivity, " Raihan Shamsi, deputy CEO and chief financial officer of GP told the FE Sunday. More than a third of the country's 150 million population are now under mobile phone coverage, as six cellphone operators' total customers crossed the 50-million milestone in September of 2009 to reach 50.4 million, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Voice communication through mobile telephony started with CDMA (code division multiple access) technology introduced by Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Ltd -- the owning company of Citycell -- in 1993. The expensive communication device started to become handy gradually after the introduction of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology by Grameenphone and AKTEL (now Robi) in 1997. Banglalink and state-run TeleTalk launched their services in 2005 and Warid came as the latest entrant in 2007. "Mobile communication is the key driver for the Digital Bangladesh. The first 50 million has taken 15 years to reach; I feel that in the right business environment, the next 50 million subscribers will happen much faster with an enabling policy-support," Mr Shamsi said. Grameenphone remains the market leader in the 50.55-million mobile market followed by Banglalink and Robi. The costly mobile service later came to the mass with the introduction of comparatively cheap GSM (global system for mobile communications) technology. The market has become tough for bottom three operators since 2005 as top three operators in the meantime grabbed more than 90 percent market shares triggering a stiff price war.

কিন্তু গ্রামীণফোনের চটকদার বিজ্ঞাপনের কোথাও না বলে শুধু হ্যান্ডবিলে ছোট্ট করে লিখে প্রথম মিনিটে অতিরিক্ত চার্জ কর্তন করা হচ্ছে। এরমধ্যে আপন ও ডিজুজ এ প্রথম মিনিটে ৯ পয়সা এবং বন্ধু ও সহজ প্যাকেজে প্রথম মিনিটে অতিরিক্ত ৩০ পয়সা চার্জ নিচ্ছে। ফলে সহজ প্যাকেজে ৭৯ পয়সার স্থলে প্রথম মিনিটে কাটছে ১.০৯ টাকা। তাছাড়া এ টাকা ১৫ শতাংশ ভ্যাটসহ ১.২৬ টাকা/মিনিট নিচ্ছে গ্রামীণফোন। গ্রামীণফোন ব্যবহারকারীদের অনেকেই ডিজিটাল বাংলাদেশ ডটকম ডটবিডিকে জানান, গ্রামীণফোন সুক্ষভাবে ডিজিটাল প্রতারণার আশ্রয় নিয়েছে। তারা গ্রাহকদেরকে বিজ্ঞাপনে ৭৯ পয়সা প্রতিমিনিটে কথা বলার লোভ দেখিয়ে প্রথম মিনিটে নিচ্ছে ১.০৯ টাকা। তাছাড়া টানা আধাঘন্টা কথা বললেও ঘোষিত মূল্যের বেশি খরচ হয়। তারা জানান, মোবাইল ব্যবহারকারীরা প্রয়োজনীয় কথা ১-২ মিনিটের বেশি সময় লাগে না। আর এ প্যাকেজ ঘোষণার পর থেকে এক-দুই মিনিট পর পর লাইনও কেটে যাচ্ছে। এ ব্যাপারে কথা বলার জন্য গ্রামীণফোনের কাষ্টমার কেয়ারে ফোন করা হলে একজন জানান, বিজ্ঞাপনে সবকিছু উল্লেখ রয়েছে।

Number of mobile users of Bangladesh to reach 73m by 2014

IE Market Research Corp. (IEMR), the Canadian-based provider of market intelligence services, said given the latest quarter data, the total wireless subscribers in Bangladesh would increase from the current 53.83 million to 72.7 million by 2014.
It however said wireless subscriber growth in Bangladesh has slowed down, growing only 4.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2009.

The market research corporation said GrameenPhone would maintain its lead in Bangladesh's wireless market over the next five years with an expected subscriber base of 32 million by 2014.
The other players will also be gaining more subscribers over the next five years. It predicts that Banglalink will have 15.5 million, TM International will have 13.1 million, and Warid will have 6.7 million mobile subscribers respectively by the end of 2014.
Grameenphone, jointly owned by Telenor and Bangladesh's Grameen Telecom, currently leads the country's 53.83 million mobile market with 23.48 million active users.
Banglalink stands second with 14.07 million users, which is followed by Axiata 10.31 million, Warid 3.01 million, Citycell 1.94 million and state-run Teletalk 1.02 million users, according to the latest posting of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the telecom regulator.
IEMR said Warid's subscriber market share will be increasing over the next five years after BTRC approved India's top telecoms company Bharti Airtel $300 million initial investment offer.

Robi lit up ten remote villages with solar power

Leading telecommunications solution provider Robi on Saturday lit up ten remote villages across the country with solar power. Undertaken as part of the CSR initiative of the company, the programme coincided with the heralding of the Bengali New Year.
The villages are Tamaruddi of Nowakhali, Bachamara of Manikganj, Pachuria of Gopalganj, Protapnagar of Shatkhira, Charjanajat of Madaripur, Motherbunia of Patuakhali, Chaitar Khamar of Kurigram, Char Neuton of Bhola, Padma of Barguna and Pirganj of Jadabpur. These villages will be known as Robi Palli.
This initiative was kicked off by Chief Marketing Officer of Robi, Bidyut Kumar Basu when he lightened up a house in a remote village of Amtoli.
To facilitate development of Bangladesh's rural people, Robi is initiating a project to reach 500 nomes in 50 hard-to-reach villages all over the country. Each of these 500 rurai households will be provided with 20WP solar panels by May this year.

JS panel asks for details on Warid, Airtel deal

Says govt incurred losses as Warid allowed to sell stake for low price
The parliamentary standing committee on the planning ministry on Sunday asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to submit a report on how 70 per cent of the shares of mobile operator Warid had been sold to India’s Bharti Airtel only for Tk 70 lakh.
The committee chairman, Oli Ahmed, after a meeting, told reporters they had discussed media reports that Warid had been allowed to sell its 70 per cent stake to Airtel only for Tk 70 lakh.
‘The country and the government sustained a loss as Warid was allowed to hand over its share for such a low price,’ he said.
The government lost millions of dollars in transfer fees as the commission allegedly allowed Warid, which invested more than $600 million in the country, to hand over 70 per cent of its stake to Airtel for only Tk 70 lakh in recent times.
The standing committee also suggested that the posts and telecommunications ministry should bring Voice over Internet Protocol under the jurisdiction of law.
It will help to increase revenue earnings of the government as well as provide internet users with better services, the committee observed.
The meeting also recommended making capable the state-run mobile operator Teletalk so that it can survive in the competition with the private mobile operators.
Committee members planning minister AK Khandoker, Nawab Ali Abbas Khan and Azizul Haque Chowdhury attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed in details different projects undertaken by the ministries of land, posts and telecommunications and social welfare.
As for land ministry, it decided that the ministry would inform the committee in three months of the steps it has taken to reclaim illegally occupied government land, how much land has so far been reclaimed and whether any new incident of land occupation has taken places in recent times.
As for social welfare ministry, the meeting decided that proper monitoring should be ensured so that the registered non-governmental organisations properly follow the conditions of registration.

India plans 'launch sale of 4G mobile services'

India plans to hold an auction of ultra-high-speed fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone spectrum soon after completion of 3G access now underway, a report said Wednesday.The sale for 4G, which will provide high-speed Internet connections, will begin as soon as operators roll out their 3G networks this year, Communications Minister A. Raja was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times newspaper.
The government expects to bring in at least 350 billion rupees (eight billion dollars) from the sell-off of 3G airwaves and a follow-on auction of broadband wireless access spectrum that began last Friday and could take weeks.
Operators believe 4G will bring near-broadband speed technology to mobile phones, allowing users to receive multimedia such as TV broadcasts and online games at rates up to 10 times faster than those possible on 3G networks.
"I do not want any delay in 4G services. We should be with the rest of the world in 4G," Raja said.
Germany on Monday began Europe's first auction of 4G frequencies.
Raja said he expected the successful telecom bidders for 3G frequency would start launching their new networks within a few weeks of receiving the spectrum when it is allocated in September.
The auction of 3G spectrum will propel India into the Internet era, giving millions who have no computer access the ability to surf the web from their phones.
It will also heat up the battle for customers in the world's fastest-growing mobile market.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has already started the pre-consultation process for the sale of 4G spectrum, Raja said.
"Once TRAI submits its recommendations, the government will work on it," he said.

টেলিটকের বিরুদ্ধে অনুমোদনহীন যন্ত্রপাতি আমদানির অভিযোগ

 বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগাযোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ কমিশনের (বিটিআরসি) অনাপত্তিপত্র (এনওসি) নেই এমন ১৬ ধরনের ৫৭২ সেট যন্ত্রপাতি আমদানি করেছে সরকারি মোবাইল অপারেটর কোম্পানি টেলিটক। এসব যন্ত্রপাতির দাম এখনো নির্ধারণ করা যায়নি।
সংশ্লিষ্ট প্রকৌশলী ও শুল্ক কর্মকর্তাদের ধারণা, এগুলোর দাম ১০-১৫ কোটি টাকা হবে। কেননা আমদানি করা ৫১২টি অপটিক্যাল ডিস্ক সফটওয়্যার যথেষ্ট দামি। চালানে বিটিআরসির ছাড়পত্র নিয়ে আমদানি করা মাত্র চার ধরনের ৫০ সেট যন্ত্রপাতি পাওয়া গেছে। এগুলোর দাম ১৫ লাখ ৬৫ হাজার ৯১২ মার্কিন ডলার বা প্রায় ১১ কোটি টাকা।
চট্টগ্রাম কাস্টম হাউস সূত্রে জানা যায়, গত ৩১ মার্চ থেকে টানা তিন দিন শুল্ক কর্মকর্তা, বিটিআরসি প্রতিনিধি, আমদানিকারকের প্রতিনিধি এবং সিঅ্যান্ডএফ প্রতিষ্ঠান মিল্কওয়ে শিপিংয়ের প্রতিনিধির উপস্থিতিতে এসব পণ্যভর্তি কনটেইনার দুটি খুলে যন্ত্রপাতির ক্ষেত্রে এই অমিল পাওয়া যায়। প্রাপ্ত মালামালের তালিকায় (ইনভেনট্রি) সংশ্লিষ্ট সকল পক্ষ সম্মতিসূচক সই করে।
এর আগে দুই বার কনটেইনার দুটি খোলা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু আমদানিকারক বা তাদের সিঅ্যান্ডএফ প্রতিষ্ঠান বিটিআরসির অনাপত্তিপত্র দেখাতে না পারায় চালানটি খালাস করা যায়নি। এ সময়ের মধ্যে টেলিটক পরপর দুটি অনাপত্তিপত্র শুল্ক কর্তৃপক্ষকে দেয়। কিন্তু এ দুটির সঙ্গে আমদানি করা যন্ত্রপাতির মিল ছিল না। পরে অনাপত্তিপত্র দুটি ভুলক্রমে দাখিল করা হয়েছে বলে উল্লেখ করে টেলিটক কর্তৃপক্ষ তা প্রত্যাহার করে নেয়। তৃতীয় দফায় বিটিআরসির যে অনাপত্তিপত্র দাখিল করা হয় তার ভিত্তিতে ৩১ মার্চ কনটেইনার দুটি খোলা হয়। এতেও অমিল পাওয়ায় সংশ্লিষ্ট শুল্ক কর্মকর্তারা আমদানিকারক প্রতিষ্ঠান টেলিটক এবং সিঅ্যান্ডএফ প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিরুদ্ধে ১৯৬৯ সালের শুল্ক আইনের ১৬ ও ৩২ ধারা ভঙ্গের অভিযোগ এনে আইনানুন ব্যবস্থা নেওয়ার জন্য জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ডের (এনবিআর) কাছে সুপারিশ করেন। এনবিআর থেকে এ সংক্রান্ত চিঠি বিটিআরসিকেও দেওয়া হয়েছে বলে জানা যায়।
যোগাযোগ করা হলে টেলিটকের ব্যবস্থাপক (লজিস্টিক সাপোর্ট) হেদায়েতুল কবির আমদানি করা যন্ত্রপাতি ত্রিপক্ষীয়ভাবে পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করে কিছু অমিল পাওয়ার বিষয়টি স্বীকার করে বলেন, ‘এতে শুল্ক কর্তৃপক্ষ একতরফাভাবে কিছু অভিযোগ এনেছে। আমরা এখন বিটিআরসির সিদ্ধান্তের অপেক্ষায় আছি। বিটিআরসি যে সিদ্ধান্ত দেবে আমরা তা মেনে নেব।’
চট্টগ্রাম কাস্টম হাউসের কমিশনার সৈয়দ গোলাম কিবরিয়া এ প্রসঙ্গে প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘এ পণ্যের চালান আমদানি নিয়ে দুটি সরকারি সংস্থার মধ্যে বিরোধ দেখা দিয়েছে। আমরা বলেছি যেসব পণ্যসামগ্রী আমদানি হয়েছে তা যদি বিটিআরসি প্রত্যয়ন করে দেয়, তাহলে পণ্য খালাসে আমাদের আপত্তি থাকবে না। আমরাও বিটিআরসির সিদ্ধান্তের অপেক্ষায় আছি। যদি ঘোষণা বহির্ভূত পণ্য থাকে তার জন্য বাড়তি শুল্ক-কর দিতে হবে।’ বন্দর সূত্র জানায়, জার্মানি থেকে ডিসেম্বর মাসে প্রতিটি ৪০ ফুট দীর্ঘ দুটি কনটেইনারে এসব পণ্য আমদানি করা হয়। এ জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় শুল্কও জমা দেওয়া হয়। কিন্তু জানুয়ারির দ্বিতীয় সপ্তাহে খালাস করার মুহূর্তে কেন্দ্রীয় শুল্ক গোয়েন্দা ও তদন্ত অধিদপ্তরের আপত্তির মুখে চালানটি আটক করা হয়।

১০ গ্রামে সৌরবিদ্যুৎ পৌঁছে দিল রবি

বাংলাদেশের গ্রামাঞ্চলের উন্নয়ন ত্বরান্বিত করতে রবি ৫০টি প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের ৫০০ বাড়িতে বিদ্যুৎ পৌঁছে দেওয়ার প্রকল্প হাতে নিয়েছে। মে মাসের মধ্যে এসব অঞ্চলের প্রতিটি বাড়িতে ২০ ওয়াট সৌর প্যানেল নিশ্চিত করা হবে। এ প্রকল্পের কারিগরি সহায়তা দিচ্ছে রুরাল সার্ভিস ফাউন্ডেশন।
বেশ কিছু সামাজিক কার্যক্রমে সম্পৃক্ত রয়েছে রবি। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় ২৮ মার্চ মেরি স্টোপস ক্লিনিকে জন্ম নেওয়া সব শিশুর মাকে বিনামূল্যে চিকিৎসা দেওয়া হয়েছে।

Mobile phone operator Rabi (ex. Aktel) handed all the equipments of solar electricity system to 20 families of remote Bachamara village under Daulatpur upazilla in Manikganj district. At the equipments giving function, Chief Marketing Officer Bidyut Kumar Bose, Executive Director of Rural Services Foundation Ruhul Quddus and Regional Manager Asaduzzaman were present, among others.
