2010 Global Mobile Awards - Mobile Innovation Grand Prix
Ubidyne

The GSMA Global Mobile Awards is the premier international showcase of product, service and creative excellence for the mobile industry; awards include a wide range of categories that are relevant for players of all sizes in the mobile value chain. In 2009, Innovation took center stage at the Global Mobile Awards as CooTek won the "Cup".
As a category of the Global Mobile Awards, we introduced the Mobile Innovation 'Grand Prix' for promising entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized companies developing and introducing innovative products and services.
The Mobile Innovation Grand Prix category differs from other Global Mobile Award categories in that it's a year-round process with several stages of judging through the year, including physical presentations at associated events and industry partner awards winners as well. During each regional event, two overall winners have won a trip to Barcelona to compete as a Finalist for the Mobile Innovation Grand Prix Cup which took place yesterday afternoon in front of the judges and a global audience. We look to the industry experts and pull from a broad array of sources; such as Operators, Venture Capital firms, Industry suppliers, etc.. In addition, we have worked closely with RIM and Qualcomm Ventures, and have fed their innovation award winners into our Global Finalists.
And here is what the judges had to say, "Against a broad spectrum of Global Finalists, this year's winner for the Mobile Innovation Grand Prix illustrated innovation, creativity and global impact. Our industry faces enormous pressures to deliver smarter and more cost effective networks. Smart antennas are a tough course to follow, and our winner has been pursuing their journey with what appears to be great benefits, resilience, and technical innovation. It was a tough decision for the judging panel, but our winner demonstrated great potential to advance our core business and we are proud to announce Ubidyne as this year's stand out GSMA Innovation winner."

VNL – VNL’s solar-powered GSM base station

VNL’s WorldGSM is a zero-opex solar-powered GSM system specifically designed to enable operators to build commercial networks in remote rural areas where ARPUs are < $2 a month.
For years operators have struggled with the same problem: Traditional GSM equipment was not designed for emerging markets. It costs too much to buy and maintain, uses too much power and is difficult to deploy (especially in areas with no electricity, poor roads and no engineers).
VNL has re-engineered GSM to overcome these challenges. Finally operators have a way to provide services for the three billion people who are not covered by a mobile network.
