Telenor behind world launch of WLAN SIM

 
The new SIM brings both new freedom and security for mobile phone users.

The world’s first WLAN-enabled SIM was launched at the World Mobile Congress 2010 in Barcelona. Sagem Orga and Telenor demonstrated numerous user cases of this ground-breaking development which brings both new freedom and security for mobile phone users.

Business development and service innovation

Telenor is constantly working on business development and service innovation.
“For three to four years we have been doing innovative research embedding Wireless LAN on the SIM card,” says Oddvar Risnes, Head of Research and Standardization, IS and Platforms in Telenor Group Business Development & Research.

Integrated radio and antenna

“Together with technology partners we have been able to develop a SIM card with integrated radio and antenna. After a period of 6-9 months of collaboration with Sagem Orga we have succeeded in building a prototype that was successfully demonstrated in Barcelona. Our WLAN SIM offers a wide range of services opening opportunities for our customers; the combined technology and security features creating strong assets,” Risnes says.
