Facebook hits 500 million mark

The number of people using Facebook hit the 500 million mark on Wednesday, meaning one in every 14 people on the planet has now signed up to the online social-networking service.
"As of this morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people around them," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post.
"This is an important milestone for all of you who have helped spread Facebook around the world."
To celebrate, the California-based firm introduced an application that lets members of the online community "tell the incredible stories of the moving and interesting ways they've used Facebook."
Examples given by Zuckerberg included Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen jogging with Facebook fans during his term as Danish prime minister and a US woman using the service to battle breast cancer.
"Our mission at Facebook is to help make the world more open and connected," Zuckerberg said.
"I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started 6 years ago."
Zuckerberg has pointed to Facebook's unrelenting growth to rebuff criticism of feature changes or privacy safeguards at the website.
Americans are increasingly obsessed with Facebook and many young women check their page even before using the bathroom in the morning, according to a poll released last week.
However, a US study released on Tuesday indicates that while people may be addicted to Facebook they rank it near the bottom when it comes to customer satisfaction.
Facebook landed with notoriously despised airlines and cable television companies in the bottom 5 percent of private companies ranked in a 2010 American Customer Satisfaction Index E-Business Report produced in partnership with ForeSee Results.
"Our research shows that privacy concerns, frequent changes to the website, and commercialization and advertising adversely affect the consumer experience," ForeSee chief executive Larry Freed said in a release.
Zuckerberg openly advocates Internet firms releasing innovations quickly and "iterating" with improvements.
"It's clear that while innovation is critical, sometimes consumers prefer evolution to revolution," Freed said.
Facebook recently overhauled privacy controls in the face of a barrage of criticism that it is betraying the trust which has made it the world's biggest social network.
Facebook is growing despite criticisms because "there really isn't a strong alternative and Facebook is relatively sticky, migrating off is a ton of work," said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

Facebook in deal to sell site credits in Asia

Facebook is partnering with a Malaysian company to sell credits at retail outlets across Asia for the first time, aiming to make it easier for millions of people to purchase virtual goods and play games on the social networking site while boosting revenue for developers.
Electronic payments company MOL — part of the business empire of tycoon Vincent Tan — will offer the online currency from August 1 at more than 5,00,000 outlets including 7-Eleven stores and internet cafes in five Southeast Asian countries, India, Australia and New Zealand, company spokesman Nor Badron said Friday.
The move is targeting people who don’t have a credit card, particularly younger Facebook users, and those who don’t want to take the risk of making payments online.
'Asia has a huge gaming community, and it’s typically young people,’ Nor said. ‘The penetration for credit cards is very low... so the developers are not making money and missing this opportunity.’
Nor said MOL already sells prepaid credits for other online games at its established network of stores, but it will be the first time that consumers can buy credits for Facebook’s applications, including such popular games as Mob Wars and FarmVille, without credit cards.
MOL, which last year bought social networking site Friendster, announced the partnership with Facebook in a press release Thursday.
'We view this agreement as a major opportunity to broaden the availability of a simple, unified currency that can be used in games and applications across Facebook,’ said Vaughan Smith, director of business and corporate development at Facebook, in the press release.
‘Working with MOL means we can offer the benefits of Facebook Credits to millions of people in Asia using a payment system that is already widely used and trusted,’ he said.

Social networking privacy issue : facebook or twitter?

Social networking websites are becoming more and more popular day by day _ facebook is in the 1st position among social networking sites! And twitter has shown increased amount of growth recently and their several shut down during the running worldcup is an appropriate example of twitter popularity!
Now come to the center of the discussing! Its about the privacy issue – the more the social networks being increased the more the privacy problems are arising! Both privacy problem and growth of social networks are proportional!
Facebook is the worst sufferer of this privacy issue as people provides every kind of personal information (from birth date to the person he is engaged with) to personal images!
And many of the users don’t have proper knowledge about the facebook privacy settings so often they experience different online problems! More over in many under developed and developing countries cyber crine related law isn’t present or not clear or not applied properly ( for example, recent facebook ban of Bangladesh due to some edited cartoons of national leaders) so, cyber crimes related to this privacy issue is increasing day by day!
Not only this but also direct psychological hit by representing other religion differently is another issue facebook is suffering of, you know the recent ban of facebook in Pakistan!
Come on, facebook is fighting against these types of cyber crimes related to their privacy issue, they are releasing developed privacy set up in a short duration! But still can’t overcome the privacy problem!
Now, what about the privacy of twitter users?
Yes, twitter has its privacy setup, if anyone want he can make his tweet private to only his followers!
But, most of the twitter users don’t use this privacy option! As twitter isn’t any place for private gossiping! More over twitter is more out going type of social network than facebook!
People tweet to inform the whole online world, where facebook is limited into the friends!
Twitter doesn’t take any private information about anyone even they’ll not take or share any basic information. So, twitter related 3rd party websites and desktop or mobile applications are more than any other social networks!
Twitter doesn’t experience any privacy issue problem yet, more over due to presence of celebraties with verified account has become twitter more interesting than other social networks! And where facebook is updating its privacy setup in a short interval twitter bird is singing about its transparency!

Clearly, while facebook is facing tremendous problems due to privacy twitter is becoming more and more popular due to transparency!

বলাবাহুল্য ফেসবুকের এসব উদ্যোগ সত্ত্বেও সন্তুষ্ট নয় এর ব্যবহারকারীরা৷ বরং দাবি উঠেছে, ফেসবুক ব্যবহারকারীদের সব প্রোফাইল শুরুতেই গোপন করে রাখতে৷ এরপর ব্যবহারকারী চাইলে ধাপে ধাপে তার প্রোফাইলের নানা অংশ উম্মুক্ত করে দিতে পারবে৷ কিন্তু ফেসবুককি সেটা করবে?

Users enter Facebook by alternative routes

 

Blockade of facebook, the social network which is being used by around nine lakh Bangladeshis, has irked both youths and people from all strata of the society.
On Monday hundreds of thousands of users of the social site demanded immediate reopening of the site so that they can continue communication with friends and relatives.
Experts said blockade of the site is not a solution such incident. The government functionaries should have found other ways to delete the unwanted links.
Talking to The New Nation yesterday chairman of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department of the University of Dhaka Dr Suraiya Pervin said blockade of the site is not a good solution. He who wants to enter the site will find out alternative ways to surf the site, she said.
She sad people who violated privacy of others through the site are educated people. Internet users can be motivated so that such incidents do not occur in the future. Despite the ban, many users were found entering facebook using different proxy sites. People who have vast knowledge about information technology can enter the site easily.
Investigation found that there are numbers of sites through which one can surf website anonymously hiding their Internet Protocol (IP) address. Through this websites on Monday many entered in their facebook accounts.
Some of them have used the proxy 110.137.25.130 on port 80 to surf the facebook. Some have also entered the blocked site through www.vtunnel.com and some used http://1.3.hidemyass.com to enter the social network. Experts said there are many such websites through which one can enter any blocked site.
Talking to The New Nation Khondoker A Al Azad, treasurer of the Internet Services Providers Association of Bangladesh demanded immediate opening of the blocked site.
He said such a move will ultimately hamper government's move to make digital Bangladesh.
"Facebook is not only used by youths. Now-a-days it is also used by people of all ages. It is also used as marketing tool. It should not be kept banned."
"Some people may have misused the technology. They should be punished. Alternative ways can be find out to stop such misuse, but such a big social network which is used globally should not be barred from use for such a lame excuse," he said.
Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, renowned IT expert, also a user of facebook, on Sunday said free flow of information has to be ensured for digitisation of the country. Blockade of facebook is not a long term solution. Ban of facebook may cast negative impact on Bangladesh's image abroad, he said.
He said that facebook is not blocked globally. So, use of the site will not be stopped forever. If anyone wants to spread propaganda, they would do so from other countries.
Choudhury suggested formation of policy to regulate facebook and other social site.
One Iqbal from Dhaka in his opinion said, "Even conservative Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia haven't done such outrageous thing."
Sheikh Monirul Islam said, "Facebook is not just a social networking tool, it has reached a level of dominance in the market which made it the powerful advertising media. That is why Microsoft paid a huge amount of US$240 million for 1.6 per cent share of facebook pushing its implied value, which is going to bring US$2 billion in revenue this year."
"Our kids need to learn from facebook how a young man of 20 years of age, a code writer since secondary school, from his Harvard dormitory, using free software MySQL, working late night drinking red-bull, created such an innovative idea of connecting students in the campus, can become a powerful dominating financial power. We need our kids to be innovative to make a real digital Bangladesh," he said.
Another user said, "It is astonishing that the authority is forcing thousands of people to use 'alternate' means to access facebook just because of one 'offensive cyber criminal."
Riya Khan said, "I just want the facebook back."
Alvy Chowdhury said, "Facebook is also banned in china but they have their own 'national security concerned' reason. The ban of facebook in Bangladesh seems rather whimsical to me. I really wonder how a government can take such a decision based on a fragile reason."
Anas Nasarullah said, "Blocking facebook is hilarious attitude of Bangladesh government. No monarchy can stand in this world of open information."
Nadia said, "This is hilarious, we are not bothered of these political issues. We just ant facebook back."

Dr. Farseem M Mohammedy said, "There are positive effects of facebook, which is totally sidelined in this government ban. We can arrange many study-circles and science club activities through facebook. Other organisations have stronger presence among the facebook members. Why stopping this site for some nincompoops."

ফেসবুক চালু হচ্ছে আগামী কাল

সামাজিক যোগাযোগবিষয়ক জনপ্রিয় ওয়েবসাইট ফেসবুক কাল খুলে দেয়া হতে পারে। বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগযোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ কমিশন-বিটিআরসি সূত্র এমন আভাস দিয়েছে। ডাক ও টেলিযোগযোগমন্ত্রী রাজিউদ্দিন আহম্মেদ রাজু ও বিটিআরসি চেয়ারম্যান মেজর জেনারেল (অব.) জিয়া আহমেদ আজ দেশে ফেরার পর এ বিষয়ে সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হবে। বিটিআরসির একটি সূত্র জানায়, ইতিমধ্যে অর্ধেকের বেশি কাজ সম্পন্ন হয়ে গেছে। মঙ্গলবার ফেসবুক খুলে দেয়ার গুজব উঠলে এ বিষয়ে বিটিআরসির একজন শীর্ষ কর্মকর্তা বলেন, ফেসবুক এখন পর্যন্ত বন্ধ রয়েছে। তাদের অনুসন্ধান প্রক্রিয়া প্রায় সম্পন্ন হয়ে গেছে। মন্ত্রী ও চেয়ারম্যান দেশে ফেরার পর এ বিষয়ে চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হবে। তিনি বলেন, যদি সবকিছু ঠিকমতো এগোয় তাহলে কাল ফেসবুক খুলে দেয়া হতে পারে। বিটিআরসি প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার বিরুদ্ধে বিকৃত ও কুরুচিপূর্ণ প্রচারণার কারণে ২৯ মে রাতে ফেসবুক বন্ধ করে দিয়েছিল।

কি করবেন যদি ইউটিউব বা ফেইসবুকের মত সাইট ব্লক করে দেয়া হয়?

কিছুদিন আগে বাংলাদেশের মানুষ এক নতুন আভিজ্ঞতার সন্মুখীন হয়েছিলেন আর তা হচ্ছে ইউটিউবের মত সাইটে প্রবেশ করতে না পারা। শুধু বাংলাদেশ নয়, বিশ্বের অনেক দেশের মানুষই এই সমস্যার সন্মুখীন হন। বিশেষ করে চীনে এই ধরনের সমস্যায় প্রতিনিয়তই পড়তে হয়। চীনে ইউটিউব বন্ধ আছে বেশ অনেক দিন ধরেই। ইউটিউব ছাড়াও আরো অনেক সাইটেই চীন থেকে প্রবেশ করা যায়না। এছাড়া সিরিয়া সহ আরও অনেক আরব দেশেই বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়েছে ফেইসবুক। তাহলে সমাধান কি ?
অনেক প্রক্সি সাইট আছে যেখানে আপনার কাঙ্ক্ষিত সাইটের URL টি লিখে আপনি সেই সাইটে প্রবেশ করতে পারবেন। কিন্তু এসব প্রক্সি সাইট থেকে ইউটিউবের মত ভিডিও শেয়ারিং সাইটে প্রবেশ করা যায় ঠিকই কিন্তু ভিডিও দেখা যায়না।
তাহলে আরো ভাল সমাধান কি?
আমার মতে সবচেয়ে ভাল সমাধান হচ্ছে “ফ্রী গেইট”। মাত্র ৪১০কিলোবাইটের ছোট্ট একটি সফটওয়্যার।

সফটওয়্যারটি এখান থেকে আপনার কম্পিউটারে ডাউনলোড করুন। URL: http://download.cnet.com/Freegate/3000-2085_4-10415391.html তারপর রান করুন। সফল ভাবে রান হলে সফটওয়্যারটি নিচের ছবির মতো দেখাবে।

রান করার সাথে সাথে ইন্টারনেট এক্সপ্লোরার খুলবে। এবার সাধারন ভাবেই ইন্টারনেট এক্সপ্লোরারের এড্রেস বারে ওয়েবসাইটের ঠিকানা লিখে যেকোন সাইটে প্রবেশ করতে পারবেন।
সতর্কতাঃ  কম্পিউটার বন্ধ করার আগে সফটওয়্যারটি অবশ্যই বন্ধ করে নিন।
টিপসঃ  সফটওয়্যারটি বন্ধ না চালু অবস্থায় যদি ইন্টারনেট এক্সপ্লরার ঠিক মত কাজ না করে, তাহলে সফটওয়্যারটি বন্ধ করে আবার চালু করলেই সব ঠিক হয়ে যাবে।

ফেসবুক ব্যবহারের ঝুঁকি বাড়ছে প্রতিনিয়ত

দিন দিন বেড়েই চলছে সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্কিং সাইটগুলোর ব্যবহারকারী। ব্যবহারকারী বাড়ার সাথে সাথে বাড়ছে নিরাপত্তা জনিত ঝুঁকির বিষয়টি। সম্প্রতি বিশেষজ্ঞরা সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্কিং সাইটে নিরাপদ বিচরণের জন্য বেশকিছু পরামর্শ প্রদান করেছেন। যা ফেসবুকে আপনাকে নিরাপদ রাখতে পারে। প্রথম পরামর্শ হচ্ছে বন্ধু নির্বাচনের ক্ষেত্রে সতর্কতা। ফেসবুকে যেকেউ আপনাকে বন্ধুর আমন্ত্রণ পাঠাতে পারে। কিন্তু সবাই কি বন্ধু? উত্তর নিঃসন্দেহে ‘না’। তাই নিজের গোপনীয়তার বিধিনিষেধের সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্য রেখে বন্ধু নির্বাচন করুন। একইসঙ্গে কাউকে বন্ধু তালিকায় যোগ করার আগে তার সম্পর্কে খানিকটা জেনে নিন। ফেসবুকে অনেকেই নিজের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগের সবকিছু দিয়ে দেন। মানে মোবাইল, ফোন, ই-মেইল এমনকি বাড়ির ঠিকানা পর্যন্ত। বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন এই অভ্যাস মোটেই ঠিক নয়। তাই যোগাযোগের অংশটি বন্ধ করে রাখাই সমাচীন। সেক্ষেত্রে সবাই আপনার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে পারবে ফেসবুক বার্তা সেবার মাধ্যমে। আর সেটাই যোগাযোগের নিরাপদ উপায়। অবশ্য একান্তই যদি, যোগাযোগের অংশ উম্মুক্ত করেত চান, সেটা শুধুমাত্র বন্ধুদের জন্য করুন। আগেই বলেছি ফেসবুকের বন্ধু তালিকায় সবাই আপনার প্রকৃত বন্ধু নয়। এদের কেউ হয়তো কিঞ্চিৎ পরিচিত, কেউ পারিবারিক সদস্য আবার কারো সঙ্গে পেশাগত সম্পর্ক। নিরাপত্তার খাতিরে বন্ধুর তালিকাকে তাই আলাদা আলাদা বিভাগে ভাগ করে ফেলুন। এরপর এসব বিভাগের সঙ্গে প্রয়োজনমত নিরাপত্তা অপশন যোগ করেই দিলেই অনেকটা বেঁচে গেলেন আপনি। ফেসবুকে ছবি পাঠানো এবং অন্যের দ্বারা ট্যাগ হবার বিষয়ে সতর্ক থাকুন। অনেকসময় দেখা যায় বিব্রতকর কিংবা অশ্লীল কিংবা অপ্রাসঙ্গিক কোন ছবির সঙ্গে আপনাকে ট্যাগ করে দিলো কোন বন্ধু। এরপর অন্যরাও তা দেখতে পাবে ট্যাগ এর বদৌলতে। তাই সম্ভব হলে নিরাপত্তা অপশনে গিয়ে ট্যাগ করার সুযোগ বন্ধ করে দিয়ে আসুন। একইসঙ্গে আপনিও অপ্রয়োজনীয় ছবি ট্যাগিং থেকে বিরত থাকুন। বাড়তি ঝামেলা এড়িয়ে চলুন। ফেসবুকে আপনার ফটো অ্যালবাম কারা দেখতে পাবে বা কারা দেখতে পাবে না তা ঠিক করে দিন। এতে করে অপছন্দের কিংবা অপরিচিত কেউ আপনার ছবির দখল নিতে পারবে না। গুগল কিংবা অন্য কোন সার্চ ইঞ্জিন যেন আপনার প্রোফাইলে দেয়া তথ্য না পায় তা নিশ্চিত করুন। নিরাপত্তা সেটিংস একটু বদলে নিলেই সেটা সম্ভব হবে। ফেসবুক থেকে যখন বেরিয়ে যাচ্ছেন, তখন অবশ্যই লগ আউট করে যান। মনে রাখুন, পাতাটিকে সরাসরি বন্ধ না করে লগ আউট করার পর বের হোন। এটাই অন্যতম পরামর্শ।

উইকি চেহারায় ফেসবুক

উইকিপিডিয়ার আদলেই ফেসবুকে যোগ হচ্ছে একটি কমিউনিটি পেজ। জানা গেছে, নতুন এ কমিউনিটি পেজটি কুকিং বা সাইক্লিং শিরোনামে থাকবে। এ পেইজে ফেসবুক ব্যবহারকারীরা আগ্রহের বিষয় নিয়ে অভিজ্ঞতা শেয়ার করতে পারবেন। খবর ইয়াহু নিউজের।

ফেসবুক-এর বরাতে জানা গেছে, এই কমিউনিটি পেজটি এখনও বিটা অবস্থায় চলছে, আর এ বিষয়ে ফেসবুকের  দীর্ঘমেয়াদি লক্ষ্য হচেছ, এক একটি বিষয়ের উপর লোকজনের শেয়ার করা জ্ঞান ও অভিজ্ঞতা একত্রিত করা।

সংবাদমাধ্যমটির বরাতে জানা গেছে, বর্তমানে ফেসবুকের প্রতিটি কমিউনিটি পেজ মূলত উইকিপিডিয়ার তথ্য গুলোই সংযোজন করা হয়েছে। তবে ফেসবুকের কমিউনিটি পেজ তৈরির লক্ষ হলো এই তথ্যগুলো যেন ফেসবুক ব্যবহারকারীরা আরো সমৃদ্ধ ও সম্পাদনা করেন সেই পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করা।
